Painted folding screen (byobu), Japanese Meiji period

The work of folk art was disassembled to facilitate its complete repair and remounting. The paintings in tempera color on Japanese paper and relief printed back papers were cleaned with moisture and the compromised layers of reinforcement were removed, losses were filled with matching paper, the sections were mended and reinforced with Japanese paper and wheat starch paste. The cores were rebuilt with the traditional structure of multiple layers of paper in prescribed configurations over wooden lattice cores, the paintings and back papers were mounted, the original fabric borders and hinge covers were conserved for reuse, the losses in the design were inpainted using watercolor and the missing framing elements were reproduced and installed.
